Rep says E-911 center is swamped

"I think we’re swamped," he said Wednesday. "With the proliferation of cell phones, it’s not uncommon to have 20 or 30 calls come in from just one accident. And our dispatchers have to take every call, whether or not they’ve already gotten the information from someone else."

New Telephony - Vonage CEO Jeffrey Citron: Why Not E911 for Everyone?:

"NT: I have heard Homeland Security is frustrated with 911.

JC: Yes, it’s terrible. They can’t believe that they can’t get access. In Katrina you could dial 911, but the call had nowhere to go because the infrastructure is so old. With VoIP we are talking about modern advanced technology, world-class state-of-the-art, and we have to dummy it down to 1970s infrastructure. But don’t blame the states or PSAPs. Blame the funding. There have been bills in the House to make it illegal to divert 911 monies, but they failed."
