Rep says E-911 center is swamped
"I think we’re swamped," he said Wednesday. "With the proliferation of cell phones, it’s not uncommon to have 20 or 30 calls come in from just one accident. And our dispatchers have to take every call, whether or not they’ve already gotten the information from someone else."

Connected: Poor execution hurts Verizon's Internet 911 plan: "Unfortunately, the way Verizon implemented it for VoiceWing, if your broadband line goes down momentarily or even if you inadvertently disconnect the ATA power or connection to your line, VoiceWing will consider you a nomad and disconnect your service until you tell them your 'new' location."

New Telephony - Vonage CEO Jeffrey Citron: Why Not E911 for Everyone?:
"NT: I have heard Homeland Security is frustrated with 911.
JC: Yes, it’s terrible. They can’t believe that they can’t get access. In Katrina you could dial 911, but the call had nowhere to go because the infrastructure is so old. With VoIP we are talking about modern advanced technology, world-class state-of-the-art, and we have to dummy it down to 1970s infrastructure. But don’t blame the states or PSAPs. Blame the funding. There have been bills in the House to make it illegal to divert 911 monies, but they failed."

Wireless 9-1-1 Tracking a Godsend for Rescuers, Patients
" The enhanced service brought help fast for the man who had lost feeling in one of his legs. But, that wasn't the case for snowmobilers who fell through the ice in January 2004, said Jim Nickel, director of public safety communications in Brown County.
That incident happened before the center had the latest technology, and it took rescuers nearly three hours to find the couple, who were suffering from hyperthermia, Nickel said. "Wireless 9-1-1 Tracking a Godsend for Rescuers, Patients: Top News Stories at Officer.com
